Strathmore School of Finance and Applied Economics, in collaboration with Valuraha Group, presents to you the first ever Value Investment Challenge. This is the first of the many to come! The first in line is the Schools Edition which will host high school students aspiring for careers in the world of Finance and seeking to be young investors. Prepare to be amazed at what 14 – 18 year olds can come up with once the spark is lit.

 

An Investment Club was introduced in some of the leading high schools in Kenya by Valuraha Group, namely Alliance High School, Kenya High School and Precious Blood Riruta Secondary School, with the purpose of giving students exposure to the financial markets and to inculcate a saving and investment culture from a young age. The program additionally aims to encourage research within the investment space.

 

The club kicked off as a 14-week program that prepares the students to compete in the Value Investment Challenge – Schools Edition hosted by School of Finance and Applied Economics (SFAE). The competition will test students’ trading proficiency and ability to carry out financial research at a high school level.

 

The students have been given the task of analyzing some of the listed companies on the Nairobi Securities Exchange in groups of 10. The companies being analyzed are Britam Kenya, Equity Bank, Centum Investments, Home Afrika and Safaricom Ltd. The students also have to maintain a virtual portfolio in which they buy shares, bonds, treasury bills, make fixed deposits etc.

 

Sound like a daunting task? For the students, it seems not. If the mini-challenge held in their respective schools was anything to go by, these students possess the curiosity, tenacity and wits to do an exceptional analysis & presentation during the Value Investment Challenge. The students are competing for an opportunity to obtain a scholarship to pursue a finance related degree at Strathmore School of Finance and Applied Economics.  

 

The Value Investment Center is a research center within The School of Finance and Applied Economics (SFAE) focused on conducting research on the financial markets, and with a particular interest in undervalued investment opportunities. The Value Investment Challenge – Schools Edition is the flagship challenge and will be followed by consequent challenges for Universities and Professionals.
