The exceptional are among us – CPA Champion 2020
“For me, being recognized as the CPA student champion of 2020 was exciting and a great reward for the hard work I put in last year. The award is given by KASNEB, which is the country’s examining body for those pursuing the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) course. My journey began in 2019 when I won a scholarship to pursue a Diploma in Business Information Technology at Strathmore Institute. I almost lost this chance but had a lot of help from family on how to best maximize such a great opportunity. My name is Luke Amolo, a student at CPA student at SI and a 2nd-year civil engineering student at the University of Nairobi.
Killing two birds with one stone
Since I am young I have learned to take advantage of the opportunities that come my way. My elder sister, Tabbie, is a voice of thought when I find myself between a rock and a hard place. Such a time was when I had to choose between letting go of my Strathmore scholarship so I could pursue my degree at the University of Nairobi under the Equity Bank “Wings to fly” scholarship. It was not an easy decision but after a talk with my family and the team from Strathmore University I was able to use my Strathmore scholarship towards CPA as an evening student and still join the University of Nairobi. It has not been easy but I determined to finish strong. I am putting my best foot forward when it comes to my studies because this is where I have chosen to be in this season of my life.
How can one succeed in CPA?
As with all aspects of success one needs to put in the time and the hard work. I believe there is greater satisfaction from achievements that have cost you. Every good thing takes great sacrifice but the rewards are tremendous. So be ready to miss out so you can shine on. Secondly, establish a support system, surround yourself with those that support your academic intentions and those that will genuinely celebrate your highs and be there for you in your lows. Thirdly, seek knowledge from those in your field of interest. This will help you be more oriented in your field of interest as you focus to identify what specific areas interest you the most. For example, my knowledge of accounting will enable me to run my own business since I will have a firsthand knowledge of financial management which is one of the courses I have learned in CPA. Last but not least, the desire to be a greater accountant will keep you going on those days when you are exhausted and all you have is that nudge that fuels your spirit to keep on so your body can rejuvenate.
There is no time for trials and so I propose to give my best in all I do. I read for myself and always read ahead for it helps me understand the lessons better when they are taught. I build networks with those I meet for they will be my leverage when I get to the workforce. Above all, I try to make lemonade from all the lemons in my life and believe I have what it takes to be a game-changer.”
