5 students from Strathmore Institute for Mathematical Sciences (SIMS) emerged 1st and 3rd positions in the CFA Research Challenge held in Golden Tulip Hotel, Nairobi on 24th March 2017.

The top team of 5 students comprised of Rolly Rotich, Keith Maru, Joseph Theuri, Bob Mani and James Njogu from the Strathmore Institute of Mathematical Sciences (SIMS) emerged winners in the East Africa Chapter of the CFA Research challenge 2016/2017. They were guided by Mr. Ishamel Maina as the Faculty Advisor and Ms. Carolyne Kiragu as the Industry mentor. The team will represent the East African region in the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) Finals that will be held from 24th to 29th April in Prague, Czech Republic.

The research challenge offers students the unique opportunity to learn from leading industry experts and compete with peers from the world’s top business schools. It is designed to promote best practices in equity research among the next generation of analysts through hands-on mentoring and intensive training in company analysis and presentation skills. This year the different teams were required to write an equity research report on KCB bank. The teams then presented their findings to a distinguished panel of experts. The high quality of the reports and presentations earned the university the first and third position amid competition from a host of universities which included the University of Nairobi, Makerere University Business School and University of Rwanda among others.

We congratulate the team for this great achievement and wish them all the best in the finals.
