Strathmore University scoops three awards at the East African Universities Debate Championship

Strathmore University Debate Club scooped second, third and fourth place in the just concluded third annual East African Universities Debate Championship. The debate themed: Regional integration driving innovation and competitiveness for sustainable development, took place in Kampala, Uganda and brought together, a hundred participants from five countries.

The competition had East African teams from Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania and South Sudan totalling thirty two universities. Each round, the debaters argued on different motions pertaining to issues in the East African Community (EAC) and current global affairs that influence the EAC such as; the refugee crisis, international aid, cyber-crimes, feminism among others.

The debaters completed nine preliminary rounds and by the fifth day only twenty four teams from the pool of fifty teams qualified for the next round. Strathmore University out ranked fifty teams from all the East African Countries. On the 6th of August the debaters had a free day during which they visited the source of the Nile in Jinja and the Martyrs shrine in Kampala. This was followed with a continuation of debates. By the end of the semi-finals, Strathmore University had three teams fighting it out for the top position.

After a well fought final debate, Makerere University won 1st place with Strathmore University scooping 2nd, 3rd. and 4th place respectively. Strathmore also took best and second-best debaters at the competition. We also managed to produce the best East African public speakers, a parallel competition alongside the main debates.
