Strathmore University Chess Club Hosts a National Tournament

The Strathmore University Chess Club hosted a national chess tournament last weekend in Strathmore University, Students’ Center. The event was very successful with 78 registrants and 68 active participants all representative; from toddlers to senior citizens, experts to amateurs, ladies and even gentlemen.

The event was organized by the club top official with help from Chess Kenya with IMAX KENYA as a key sponsor in a deal that saw all participants get an IMAX movie ticket.


The two intense days of the weekend, with some much anticipated games and battle of wits with each player trying to checkmate the opponent across the board, included a game between the current national champions. The tournament had prize money of Kshs. 38,500 that was to be battled out in the 7 rounds of play.


The most notable part of this tournament was that the junior and younger players managed to trouble the older and more experienced ones, with a very young player winning the overall prize of Kshs. 10,000 and Sharanya Iyengar taking the ladies top prize.


Strathmore University Chess Club bagged the 2nd runners-up teams’ prize and also produced the 3rd best university men’s player.


The tournament has been lauded as one of the best this year and the Strathmore University Chess Club promises the future can only be better.
