Strathmore University Business School partners with the Kenya Red Cross Society to support high schools in informal settlements

Strathmore University Business School (SBS) has partnered with the Kenya Red Cross Society in a bid to support high schools located in informal settlements around Nairobi and several counties across Kenya to prepare to eventually reopen.

Through a fundraising initiative dubbed ‘Believe in a Better Tomorrow’, the SBS community in partnership with the Kenya Red Cross Society, their alumni, and other partners are rising to the challenge to support high school students, teachers, and patrons in preparation to return to school next year.

In anticipation of schools’ reopening and the new guidelines from the Ministry of Health along with heightened levels of Water Sanitation and Health (WASH) requirements for all learning institutions, SBS in collaboration with the Kenya Red Cross Society is working to ensure that these schools are adequately prepared. They are doing this through the provision of handwashing stations and reusable masks for each learner. This initiative will also ensure that WASH training and learning materials are available to ensure the adoption of a new culture of increased hygiene and sanitation for all teachers, patrons, and students.

Partner schools with a combined enrollment tally of over 1,500 students across six counties will be engaged through the Strathmore University Community Service Centre which hosts several initiatives including the Macheo Achievement Program. The Macheo Achievement Programme, an initiative of the Community Outreach Program (COP) began in February 2012 and aims to help students from troubled neighborhoods navigate successfully through school life to emerge stronger and well equipped to excel at their chosen fields of endeavor.

Macheo, which means sunrise in Swahili is an After-School-Educational Support Programme. Macheo organizes after-school as well as holiday programs which provide academic tutoring, personal mentoring, and character development for High School students. Macheo has five core aims: reduce secondary school dropout cases, improve the academic performance of the secondary students in the program, ensure the transition of the students to the next class in high school, achieve secondary school graduation into university/college/vocational school or talent school and character education.

With 190 students having successfully completed their secondary school education under the Macheo Achievement Program, 90 students have received scholarships to study degree and diploma courses in Strathmore University and other colleges and universities and another 150 students are currently enrolled in the program with the hope to complete their secondary education in the near future.

We appeal to you to join our mission to promote learning and serve society. Together, we can rise to face challenges and create a better future for our youth.
