Strathmore Swords move to third after beating Eagles

Strathmore Swords moved up to third position in the national basketball league after beating Eagle Wings 12-3 in overtime to win the game 61-52 on Sunday after the game had ended in a tie in normal time. Linda Nyikuli of Eagle Wings hit 2 free throws with 34 seconds remaining to force the overtime.

The first quarter saw both teams exchange the lead, and for the second quarter Swords pushed their lead to as many as 7 points over the first eight minutes of play. The margin however, would hover around 5 points for most part of the quarter. The lead changed 17 times and tied 12 and when it looked like Swords had it Eagle Wings fought back to force an overtime.

“I wasn’t confident on our rebounding, that’s why we kept the ball with less than 20 seconds to go” Strathmore Coach Sylvia Kamau said when she was asked about her team strategy with 0:16 on the clock and it paid.

Strathmore Swords took control in the overtime, with Manuela Biel starting the break-away to make it 52-49 with 3:21 to play; Joyce Masiga had a good eye above the arc making it 55-51 on the next possession. From there on Eagle Wings were unable to make any meaningful plays.

Mollete Akinyi had 18 points, Manuel Biel 16 points and point guard Susan Manya 12 points for Strathmore.

The game was aired live on DSTV’s Supersport Channel SS9.
