Strathmore Leos beat Uganda’s Kyambogo University to Lift Regional Rugby Title

Kenya’s Strathmore University on Sunday beat  Kyambogo University of Uganda 14-10 in the rugby sevens final to clinch gold on the third day of the East African University Games at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT).

 

Strathmore won their first regional title and ended Uganda’s dominance in the competition. Makerere University, who won the 2014 crown, were eliminated in the quarter-finals.

 

Kenyatta University’s Blak Blad won bronze after they edged out University of Nairobi’s Mean Machine 21-10 in the play-off match.

 

Strathmore fell behind to Donald ole Tayet’s early try and hit back through tries from Meshack Odhiambo and Ted Agutu with Brian Alugwe converting twice to give the Kenyans a 14-5 lead at halftime. Kyambogo returned stronger in the second half but were repelled.

 

Strathmore coach Mitch Ocholla praised his team for the hard-fought win.

 

“Playing Kenya Cup matches has helped us. We were able to pin down our opponents,” Ocholla told Daily Nation Sport on Sunday.

 

Strathmore thrashed Blak Blad in the semi-final while Kyambogo saw off Mean Machine.
