The Strathmore University Community celebrated Holy Mass to pray for the repose of its Chancellor, Bishop Javier Echevarria on Tuesday 20th December 2016 at the University Chapel. 

 

The main celebrant of the Mass was Pro–Chancellor Strathmore University, Rev. Dr. Silvano Ochuodho who gave details of the passing away of the 84 – year old Bishop Javier Echevarria, that had recently taken place on 12th December, 2016 in a hospital in Rome. 

 

The Pro-Chancellor reminded the congregation of the great love that the Chancellor had for the University and that the institution had always been in his prayers and thoughts.  He shared with the congregation the qualities that Bishop Echevarria, the 2^nd successor after St. Josemaria, espoused and lived in a profound way; that of serenity, gentleness and a smile in all circumstances.  

 

In his homily, he also told of how Bishop Echevarria had on the occasion of Strathmore University receiving its’ charter in 2008, taken time to answer a few questions on the founding of Strathmore.  When asked, what he expected of Strathmores’ students and staff, the late Chancellor had been emphatic that all should not only have top-notch technical skills but should strive to contribute towards a better society and a better a family.

 

Likening the life of the late Bishop with that of St. Paul in the Gospel, Fr. Silvano said the words of St. Paul, ‘I have fought the good fight and completed my race’ could be applied to Bishop Echevarria’s life, since by his life and example, he had set a good example for all who knew him.

 

Fr. Silvano called on all in the university community to emulate their Chancellor to love and live for each other.

 

Visiting Strathmore University in 2006

During his tenure as Prelate, Bishop Echevarria had the opportunity to visit many countries. His visit to Kenya took place in 2006, during which, he had among other activities presided over Strathmore University’s Annual Graduation Ceremony.  

 

On that occasion, the Chancellor was awarded an honorary degree as Doctor of Letters.  He gave a gift to Strathmore, the figures of Our Lady, Baby Jesus and St. Joseph that are placed at the Shrine near the University Library.
