From L-R (Tupac Gatiramu, John Mburu, Roy Maina and Wanderi Kariuki)

Strathmore University Golf Club tiered 2nd at the inaugural Inter-varsity Golf Tournament that took place at the Vet Lab Sports Club.

The team comprising of 5 students, enjoyed a first experience of competing with other universities in the game of golf, through the mentorship of their coach Peter Karanja. The team practiced three times a week, a move that created a synergy and enabled them to play well for the competition.

“It was great to compete with people of the same age bracket as us. The Coach made us aware of the seriousness of the competition, and through the practice sessions we had, we learnt to challenge each other bringing out the best from all us,” team captain John Mburu – 2nd year Bachelor of Commerce (BCOM) student, stated.

The competing squad comprised of the Captain – John; Roy Maina – a 4th Year Bachelor of Business Information Technology (BBIT) student; Tupac Gatiramu – a 2nd year BCOM student; and Wanderi Kariuki – a 1st Year Financial Economics (FE) student. Alfred Mutahi – a 3rd year BCOM student won 2nd prize of 40 points in the whole tournament, albeit playing with a different team, adding to the overall group score.

Coach Karanja commended the players for the game played during the competition, “the team played a very good game. I was proud of them. They won from a compilation of individual scores from each student’s game. 70 students from universities across Kenya participated in the competition.”

Coach Karanja currently trains Strathmore students and staff members, 3 times a week, in an effort to build the club and grow more members to love and play the sport.
