School of Management and Commerce (SMC) Bachelor of Commerce (BCOM) students are set to travel to Vancouver, Canada for a student exchange program at University of British Columbia-Sauder Business School from 27^th May to 5^th June 2016. The students will be accompanied by SMC Dean, Dr. David Wang’ombe and an SMC Graduate Assistant, Faith Njaramba.  SMC has organised this international exchange program as part of a collaboration with Sauder Business School of University of British Columbia (UBC).

 

The experiential tour will include lectures from some of the Professors of the Sauder Business School including Prof Tom Ross- B.A. (Hon.) (U.W.O.), M.A., Ph.D. (Pennsylvania), Dr Jim Brander- BA (British Columbia), MA PhD (Stanford) and Dr James Tansey- BSc Hons, PhD (University of East Anglia, UK). There will also be corporate visits, cultural visits to sites of importance such as the Museum of Anthropology, Lynn Valley Canyan Park and Canada Port Metro. An inter-cultural exchange with students from UBC including an ice skating session will also be part of the exciting experience for the students.

 

Strathmore’s School of Management and Commerce is keen on exposing the students internationally and has entered into various cross-border collaborative agreements with highly-ranked universities with the aim of sharing resources and expertise as well as providing opportunities for faculty and student exchange. Some of these institutions include: University of St. Gallen (Switzerland), Kyung Hee University (South Korea) and University of British Columbia (Canada).

 

Last year, BCom students visited the University of St. Gallen Switzerland. The students were involved in the 45^th St. Gallen Symposium whose highlights included debate on the topic ‘Proudly Small’ by panelists, among them: Prof. Daron Acemoglu- MIT Economics, Prof. Thomas Jordan- Swiss Economist, and Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame.

 

SMC is committed to providing a rich exposure to the students internationally, in addition to equipping them with quality university education.

 

The MoU also entails other prospective areas of collaboration between the two institutions, including:

• The exchange of visiting students, scholars, faculty and post- doctoral fellows;
• The exchange of scholarly information including research papers;
• The exchange of invitations to attend scholarly meetings, seminars and conferences;
• Joint conferences, workshops and exhibitions;
• Review of other possible areas of cooperation in a variety of research and academic projects.

Dr. Wang’ombe expressed optimism for the upcoming exchange program, articulating that such exposure helps widen the academic as well as cultural horizons of the participants. “This exchange program is in line with the SMC mission in offering superior quality academic training to its students. We look forward to the experience,” he added.
