Sports Round-up: Blades and Swords post impressive performances in league matches

The Strathmore Blades played against the Kenya Airports Authority in a Kenya Basketball Federation league match held at the United States International University of Africa (USIU-A), Nairobi on the 2nd of June producing an electrifying performance to win the match 56-40. Strathmore Blades Coach, Tony Ochieng believed that his team was determined to win, especially after having an international friendly in the past week against the Ghana Revenue Authority Basketball team at the Strathmore Sports Complex.
“I was quite confident that the Blades would post a good performance after the international friendly that we hosted at Strathmore against the Ghana Revenue Authority Basketball team. The match was a chance to test our capabilities and the Blades took up the challenge to improve on our weaknesses in readiness for our league matches,” said Coach Ochieng.
Blades vs Tigers
The basketball season runs from March to December with the Blades currently standing at 5th position with two games to the end of the first leg. The team is determined to win their remaining two games as they clash with the United States International University of Africa Basketball team (Tigers) in the next league match at the Nyayo National Stadium Gymnasium. “The game will be a tough one us due to four of our key players are currently nursing injuries, but we are determined to give our best,” said Coach Ochieng.
The Strathmore Swords posted an impressive performance winning all their league matches with their recent win being against USIU-A Flames winning the match 60-29. They are currently standing at 2nd position with two games to the end of the first leg. The Swords play their upcoming league matches at the Nyayo National Stadium Gymnasium this weekend.
Monthly Football Friday Tournament
And locally, the Student Council in conjunction with Strathmore University Sports held the 2nd Monthly Football Friday Tournament on 31st May, 2019 at the Strathmore Sports Complex. The defending champions AS Roma won the tournament yet again after going all the way to post-match penalties against Lolo FC.
The most valuable player from the tournament was Stephen from Lolo FC who showcased a masterclass performance to outwit the experienced players for the award. The winners and 1st runners up of the tournament were presented their trophies by the Student Council President Kevin Mwendwa, Finance Executive Joshua Makara and Academic Executive Blessings Mutheu. The tournament is part of the sports-for-all initiative which seeks to tap into a pool of talent within the student body, in line with the 10th student council philosophy of Unity, Service and Growth.
