SIMS Doctoral Fellows Receive National Research Fund Funding
Strathmore Institute of Mathematical Sciences (SIMS) Doctoral Fellows Purity Ngina and Titus Orwa will receive new research funding from the National Research Fund (NRF) of upto Kshs. 2million each, to further their research work in mathematical modelling of infectious diseases; HIV/AIDS and Malaria respectively.
Through the supervision of Dr. Rachel Waema Mbogo Director Graduate Research and Training, and Prof. Livingstone Luboobi Prof. of Biomathematics, the researchers are expected to use their funds to conduct research only, for the three year period of funding.
NRF fund research activities globally, that have economic significance to the host country. The Mandate of the Funds is to facilitate research for the advancement of science, technology and innovation as provided in Section 33 of the ST&I Act, 2013.
Puritys research will analyze a mathematical model describing HIV dynamics taking into account therapy and the immune response of infected persons. The distinguishing feature from other mathematical models in the literature is the inclusion of the non-infectious virus resulting from the use of Protease Inhibitors (PIs), the fusion entry inhibitors drugs (FI), the immune response and consideration of the activation process of the CD8+ T-cells. Her research topic is titled; Mathematical modeling of in-vivo HIV Optimal Therapy and Management.
Titus research is centered on an in-host mathematical model of malaria that describes the dynamics of the malaria parasite in the liver and blood stages and its interactions with the immune cells, hepatocytes and erythrocytes. The researcher aims to improve therapeutic control of malaria with focus on malaria vaccine and antimalarial drugs that target the parasites at the pre-erythrocytic stage. His research topic is titled; Mathematical Models for Hepatocytic-Erythrocytic Dynamics and Therapeutic Control of Malaria.
