Leos Strike Gold in Embu

Strathmore men’s rugby team, Leos, are the new kings of national rugby after winning the 2022 Embu 7’s. Leos brought down 2019 champions, Menengai Oilers, 19-12 in the final to clinch the bragging rights courtesy of tries and conversions by Brunson Madigu, Philemon Olang and Barnabas Owuor. The championship win is the team’s first silverware, breaking the team’s trophyless record.

Enroute to the final, the Leos won all their games on the first day against the Bulls, Stallions and Black blad without conceding a try, evidence of a stellar backline and superb team effort. On the second day, Leos hammered Administration Police rugby in the quarterfinals 31-0. Later on in the day, they edged out Nakuru RFC in the semifinals courtesy of a long-range penalty kick in sudden death after the sides tied at fulltime.

Ooro George, who was feted Leos’ most valuable player last season, added to his collection another recognition as he was named the tournament’s most valuable player.

Team training and preparations resume this week ahead of the scheduled national 7s circuit which is set to begin with the Kabeberi 7s at the RFUEA grounds.
