Leos Lift Dala Title

A commanding display of Sevens Rugby saw Strathmore Leos lift the 2013 Safaricom ‘Dala Sevens’ title after defeating Mwamba RFC 32-10 in the finals at the Kisumu Polytechnic grounds on Sunday 4th August 2013.


It was Mwamba who threw down the gauntlet early on, taking the game to Strathmore early on but were caught out when Charles Omondi scored against the run of play, his unconverted try giving the Leos a 5-0 lead.

Still in possession, the Leos would go 10-0 up when Geoffrey Githaiga scored the second try for the students.


A quick fire try by Billy Odhiambo complimented by a Humphrey Owuor conversion soon after half-time saw Strathmore go 17-0 up as they continued to boss proceedings on the pitch. A storming run from Joseph Oriwo gained good ground for Mwamba, his perfectly timed offload found the onrushing Edgar Abere who scored at the corner, cutting the deficit to 17-5.


Cyprian Kuto would land a rapid brace, taking Strathmore 27-5 and when Churchill Ooko grounded the ball, the game was all but over, 32-5 to the Leos. A great solo run from Horace Otieno saw Mwamba hit double digits, his unconverted try making the score 32-10 at full time.


Speaking after the match, Leos Head Coach Mitch Ocholla said, “”Kudos to my boys they played according to the plan…we ensured we were firing on all cylinders…and the results spoke for us.”

Strathmore’s Cyprian Kuto was the top try scorer with his team mate Billy Odhiambo as the most valuable player while Leo Humphrey Owuor was awarded best try scorer. Impala’s Anthony Nyandigisi who lay his foundation in Rugby in Leos as the top point’s scorer.

The coach noted this is the first triumph at the ‘Dala Sevens’ and he is happy with the commitment the players put in the offseason. He also commended the Dean of Students Mr. Paul Ochieng for support accorded to the team.
