Law Students Win at the Inaugural National Equality Moot Court Competition

It was a big win for 3rd year Strathmore University Law students, Barkley Odhiambo and Marion Ogeto, at the inaugural National Equality Moot Court Competition that was hosted at Strathmore University on the 4th of May 2017; with the award ceremony taking place at the Weston Hotel later in the day.

The moot competition (Equality Moot on the Maputo Protocol) focused on women’s rights, more specific to the 2/3rds gender rule and its implementation by the state.

The winners went up against other law students from various universities in nationally that included; Kabarak University, Riara University, University of Nairobi, Kisii University, Moi University and Kenyatta University. The stiff competition was further catalyzed by the experienced panel of judges, who were eager to test the knowledge and critical thinking skills of the students.

The competition consisted of preliminary rounds, whereby each team had a chance to represent the applicants to the case and respondents. From the eliminations, after the preliminary rounds, the semi-finals ensued where the top 4 students battled for the 2 spots in the final round.

At the finals, the Strathmore Law School team went against the team from Kabarak University. Through the guidance and support from Harrison Mbori Otieno (assistant Lecturer and Moot Court Coordinator at Strathmore University), the team bagged the winning price stemming from their confident public speaking skills, and in depth knowledge on the law concerning women’s rights and gender equality.

Following their success, the students have acquired an internship position with Equality Now, an international organization dedicated to action for the civil, political, economic and social rights of girls and women. They also receive a tablet from one of the sponsors of the event, Safaricom Limited.

Congratulations to the duo!!!
