There has always been an intolerance of communicative incompetence in academia and in the industry.  This is because it is expected that university students can write well and make great presentations using excellent language, because those are learning activities that mark university life.  Many  university students, however, struggle alone with various aspects of academic work presented at the university. The result is that they submit substandard work and consequently get frustrated because of the poor grades they earn. This trend is replicated especially if  students make little effort to seek help on how to make their work better.

 

The Strathmore Writing Centre was set up to help students cope with the different communication demands of university education. These demands are mainly written communication/academic writing (term papers, essay questions, reflection papers, portfolios, project proposals etc.), spoken communication (class presentations, defences etc.), as well as the use of proper language. In addition, sometimes one just runs out of ideas on how to approach various assignments, and it helps to speak to someone about even preliminary disjointed thoughts. The Writing Centre staff are keen on listening to these ideas and helping you develop them further in order to produce successful work.
