Integrity, Honesty, Diligence and Hardwork are Key – Strathmore University Graduation 2017

With glamour, excitement and a feeling of achievement, graduands, friends and family, gathered at Strathmore University graduation square in anticipation for the long awaited 2017 Graduation.
1064 students were awarded degrees this year; 94 Diploma degrees; 768 First degrees; 196 Master degrees; and 5 Doctor of philosophy degrees; 59% of the graduates being women.
While saluting the 2017 achievers, Strathmore University Chair Mrs. Bernadette Musundi challenged the graduates to exercise diligence, integrity and hardwork, taught in Strathmore, as they venture into their new journey. Mrs. Musundi expressed her excitement towards this occasion, stating that the number of years students took to study to accomplish their successes, in the different degree levels should not go unnoticed.
The University Vice Chancellor Prof. John Odhiambo, delightfully announced the direction Strathmore University is going through Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), stating that through the mentioned fields, students are set to contribute positively to building the society at large. During his address, Prof. Odhiambo also thanked the graduating class for contributing towards making Strathmore a remarkable place to study at.
The Pro-Chancellor Rev. Dr. Silvanno Ochuodho concurred with the sentiments by the University Chair and VC, urging students to practice integrity and honesty as they join their respective industries. Rev. Ochuodho advised the graduates on the importance of embracing second chances where they may fail to practice these principles. He stated that with the right mind, attitude and willingness to do right, these principles can be achieved often.
With a standing ovation, Strathmore Institute of Mathematical Science graduate Tedd Miano, was awarded the Chancellors award – an award given to students who have best demonstrated and have been recognized by the University for their integration of academic excellence with other aspects of their lives. Tedd graduated top of his Actuarial Science class with a 1st class honours.
Other awards were conferred to top students for their academic excellence. The students in each discipline included; Flachia Wangui Njagi – School of Management and Commerce: Sarah Kerubo Mbaka – Faculty of Information Technology: Isaac Muturi Kamau – Strathmore Institute of Mathematical Sciences: Imani Paige Jaoko – Strathmore Law School: Evelyn Kezia Ndungu – School of Tourism and Hospitality.
The Sports man and woman of the year awards went to Simon Owuor Odhiambo for the Sports Man of the year and Yvonne Wanjiku Karanja for the Sports Woman of the year. Rita Achieng was awarded with the Community Service Award, while Valerie Adhiambo Omondi was awarded the Esther Kidambi’s Award.
The colorful event culminated with the Chancellor Award winner Tedd Miano performing a piece titled “Alleluia”, giving everyone gathered at the square a chance to listen to his melodious voice one last time as he steps on into the new world.
