Inaugural Alumni Awards Dinner

The inaugural Strathmore University Alumni awards dinner was held on Friday 2nd August at the University Auditorium. This event, organised by the Strathmore Alumni Relations Office, is in a series of events lined up to recognise achievements of the University’s alumni in keeping with its mandate to coordinate and promote alumni activities in Kenya.

The exciting and enlightening event was attended by members of the Strathmore alumni drawn from different faculties and years. They had the honour of witnessing the winners whom they had voted for, recognized for their achievements as university ambassadors.

Prior to the awards presentation, a keynote address on ‘Excellence and Professionalism’ was made by Mr. Jona Owitti.

Mr. Owitti urged the Strathmore alumni to be true representatives of the Strathmore brand challenging them to have a global perspective in their thinking and planning. This perspective he insisted is seen in one’s conversations, their work output and even the way they format their CVs. Small details such as the prefix ‘+254’ in one’s telephone contacts does make a difference when the same CV is forwarded to another part of the world. Mr. Owitti, challenged alumni to think beyond the borders, though pointing out that the main difference between a Kenyan who has been out of the country and one who hasn’t is in the way they drive.

He challenged the audience to aim high so as to achieve excellence.

Mr. Owitti, a director of Security Risk Solutions Limited (SRS), is one of the founder members of ISACA Kenya Chapter, is a part-time lecturer and has been a parent at the University. He attributed the good turnout of his son as a ‘true gentleman’ from having been a student here at Strathmore.

Also present at the Alumni Awards dinner was Ms. Jane Kilonzo, Chairperson of the SOA Alumni chapter, and Mr. Luis Borrallo, Director, Advancement and External Affairs.
