I persevered in the little things

Rosalia Mwikali stands out as a social, outgoing and passionate person in what she sets her mind to, someone who loves to inspire people positively with every opportunity she gets. She has been part of the Strathmore University fraternity for 17 years since joining the university back in 2002 as a laundry assistant. Rosalia is currently the senior catering supervisor of the catering services department which she attributes to her passion and dedication to her work. Rosalia shares her experience with us.

How did you join Strathmore University?

I joined Strathmore in 2002 immediately after finishing my Diploma in Food and Beverage at Kibondeni College. I finished my course on 26th July and began working on 2nd August as a laundry assistant.

What’s your job description?

I am the senior catering supervisor of the University catering services department. My job involves planning, communicating, recruiting and coordinating everything involving the cafeteria within the university. I also take part in enhancing the quality of the service in the cafeteria by conducting customer surveys to assess the department’s performance. My biggest role is to promote high standards of service.

How has your experience at Strathmore University been?

Strathmore University has been home for me, I got my first job here and I’m still here. The experience has been a learning process, I started working as a laundry assistant, housekeeping assistant, waitress, assistant cafeteria supervisor, cafeteria supervisor and currently the senior catering supervisor.

Strathmore has helped me improve my personality due to the numerous interactions I make daily. It has also instilled my desire to learn more. I am currently pursuing a Masters in Sociology (Entrepreneurship Development)

How are you able to be excellent at your job?

The university’s theme is doing ordinary things in extraordinary ways and I try to achieve this in all my endeavors. My love for detail is something that has helped me, I don’t do things in a hurry to finish but steadily in the best way possible. I also practice the virtue of patience, to move through all those jobs in a span of 17 years requires a lot of patience. I was never a quitter and I showcased perseverance in the little things I did. Lastly, time management is something that helps me to work effectively and productively.

What stands out for you at Strathmore University?

Strathmore stands out as one big family for me. There’s so much care for one another which makes you feel comfortable working here. Orderliness also stands out as everything is usually done in a systematic order with decorum.

What motivates you?

“Do everything in love, thus there will be no little things, and everything in little things will be big.” – said Saint Josemaría Escrivá.

This quote by Saint Josemaría Escrivá motivates me to do everything in love no matter how big or small it may seem.

I am satisfied when I have achieved something and done it with excellence.

What do you love doing in your spare time?

I love to mentor young girls and help them broaden their minds to new ideas, possibilities and opportunities for personal growth. I also love traveling and socializing.
