Fun, colour and pomp at the 2019 annual sports day

Staff and students enjoying zumba at the 2019 Strathmore Sports Day.

The morning rain did not prevent a large number of students and staff from flocking to the Sports Complex to represent their various faculties for the Strathmore University Annual Sports Day. Faculties dressed in their school colours battled it out across the various sports including Soccer, Basketball, Rugby, Hockey, Handball, Volleyball, Athletics, Archery and Table Tennis. The Strathmore University Mental Health Club also held a Holi run to culminate its awareness week themed on adulting successfully where students got to engage in a colour run.

Every school organizes the annual sports day. It has great importance in the life of a student. Along with great fun, it is also a good learning experience. Apart from games and sports, students learn to have a sporting spirit. Schools, faculties and staff members got the opportunities to defend their departments, to outshine their opponents and attain trophies in the different matches.

Thrill, excitement, and songs filled the air. The pleasure of winning were all moments worth seeing and enjoying. Not everyone can win but it is good to see the deserving winners. We must take sports with a healthy sportsman spirit. The objective of the annual sports day is to bring out the talents and sportsman spirit of all the students and staff.

The overall winner of the day was the Faculty of Information Technology (FIT) while Strathmore University Business School (SBS) were the runners up. The winners were awarded trophies by the Vice-Chancellor – Designate, Dr. Vincent Ogutu.

For me, the highlight of the event was the soccer matches. The staff team last year lost in the finals ending the tournament as runners up. This year, however, they came back stronger and won the event during the post-match penalties. The Vice-Chancellor- Designate, Dr. Vincent Ogutu was also part of the team.

The event was organised by the Sports department, Student Council and various sponsors.
