Finance and Applied Economics Students on an academic trip in South Africa

A Group of Strathmore Finance and Applied Economic (SFAE) Fourth Year students and four faculty members; Dr. John Olukuru, Mr. Ferdinand Othieno, Ms. Sheila Kibicho and Mrs. Mary Omingo, are currently in South Africa for an academic trip. The team left for South Africa on 7th February and will be back on 15th February.
The group will be visiting top ranking academic institutions in three of South Africas great cities, these are; the University of Johannesburg (UJ) in Johannesburg, the University of Cape Town (UCT) in Cape Town and the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Durban.
The aim of the trip is to provide an opportunity to interact with other students taking similar courses as those found within the Bachelor of Business Science. The trip also gives an opportunity to those who would wish to do their masters in respective courses or any other field to explore their options. At the University of Johannesburg some of our students will be presenting their research projects at a workshop.

The SFAE Research Strategy is to build on its well-established expertise in the quantitative modelling of Finance, Economics & Actuarial problems while broadening its scope to develop related areas within these fields. Key will be to exploit areas of subject linkages i.e. Financial Economics, Macro Finance, Financial Economics applications in Actuarial Science & Risk modelling. Our aim is to make a significant contribution to theoretical developments across this broad set of disciplines and to solving problems of concern to industry, the public sector and society in general.
The research strategy has among others the following key objectives: To maintain and enhance a thriving research culture, To reinforce Inter-disciplinary engagement, To develop our existing commercial, industry and public sector contacts to ensure that our research is well informed by the issues of relevance to real world decision makers, To embrace the combination of high quality academic work with practical relevance and lastly, To leverage the strength of our portfolio of successful students and alumni as a source of research publications and commercial/industry contacts and collaborations.
