Cyber Security in a Digital Age and Strathmore University Press Books Launch

Microsoft’s Associate General Counsel and Vice President of Corporate, External and Legal Affairs Mr. Craig Shank, took students through an insightful lecture on realizing the promise of the digital age; while tackling cyber security. The lecture organized by Strathmore Law School (SLS) analyzed technology in the digital era and how security can affect or be improved to accommodate change. The lecture was soon followed by the launch of four books published under Strathmore University press with Rt. Hon. Dr. Willy Mutunga, D. jur, SC EGH, Chief Justice and President of the Supreme Court of Kenya as the chief guest, and Prof. Githu Muigai – Attorney General of the Republic of Kenya as an invited guest.

Mr. Shank discussed some of the lawful and unlawful ways companies work at engaging Microsoft access, explaining that the world has become a small place with the introduction of new technologies and therefore it is important for people/companies to respect boarders and each other’s views along the way. He added that this can be done best through individuals and companies assessing their values and commitment, through transparency. “Therefore what’s to be done? We need to look at our values and commitment. The capacity of transparency… There is need for the internet to be governed by good law. As technology runs fast we still need to balance public safety, privacy and free expression,” Mr. Shank said.

After the interactive session, the exciting, long awaited, anticipated book launch took place with the following books being launched: Strathmore Law Review – a students published review; Strathmore Law Journal – students in collaboration with faculty published journal; The Constitutional Law of Kenya on Devolution – written by Dr. Mutakha Kangu; The Common Law, Judges’ Law: Land and Environment Law Before Kenyan Courts – authored by Justice Prof J. B Ojwang.

While giving his keynote address, Hon. Dr. Willy Mutunga lauded Strathmore Law School for seeking legal excellence through launching of books, thus setting themselves apart. “The two journals are outputs of a law school that seeks excellence. A book launch of this magnitude symbolizes the best in academy world. Strathmore Law School emulates the likes of Harvard University, Oxford University amongst other leading university in the world, in offering excellence in academia”, he said.
