3^rd year finance students enjoyed an opportunity of networking with finance industry experts, in the second annual Finance Roundtable event, hosted by the Strathmore University School of Management and Commerce.

 

Students borrowed a wealth of knowledge from experts representing Kenya National Audit Office (KENAO), Barclays Bank, KCB Group Limited, British Council, Westworks, Capital Markets Authority (CMA), GenAfrica Asset Capital, Primeridge Investments, Kenya Power & Lighting (KPL), ICEA Lions and from entrepreneurs in the field of business.

 

Ms. Elizabeth Nguringa, an expert in the field of public sector financing, addressed the students on what to expect as they prepare for work placement opportunities. In her speech, Ms. Nguringa advised students to uphold honesty and integrity, in a field that is facing a lot of exposition following corruption issues in Kenya. She also addressed the importance of attaining qualifications in an effort to ensure job opportunities are not missed for lack of papers.

“Ask yourself, once you get a job, where do you want to be as a professional? Never miss a job because of lack of qualification, but most importantly be good at your job,” Ms. Nguringa said.

 

The School of Management and Commerce (SMC), where students can specialize in finance, ensures a coherent degree structure which is well-rounded, thereby facilitating interdisciplinary training. The industry experts engaged students in an array of topics that included; Banking Operations; Regulation of Capital Markets; Portfolio Investment; Mortgage Financing; Public Sector Financing; Real Estate Financing; Private Equity & amp – Venture Capital; Capital Markets; Risk Management; Funds Management; Insurance; Financial Advisory Services; Asset Valuation; Wealth Management; Capital Raising; Finance Analytical & amp – Regulatory Reporting; and finally Trends in Banking/Entrepreneurship.

 

After a session of one-on-one roundtable, between students and the industry experts, a cocktail networking session took place, to allow for further discussions with more gurus in the various fields.
