There is a moment, perhaps you have lived it, when someone looked past your performance or your struggle, and simply saw you. That moment, however brief, changes things.
The upcoming Vice Chancellor’s Conference invites the Strathmore community to share stories of personalised attention, those real, human moments when someone was truly seen, and where that recognition made a lasting difference. Here is an opportunity to reflect on the defining moments that shaped the past year.
On December 8, 2025, Strathmore University hosted a workshop on transformative education. But what unfolded was less a conference and more a mirror, held up to a question that each of us carries: Are we truly seeing the people in front of us?
The main guest was Franciscan friar and celebrated science teacher Peter Tabichi, who set the tone with disarming simplicity. Focusing on frontier regions, he said, they are not only remote landscapes; they are the unexplored emotional terrains within every learner, with their fears, their unspoken hopes, their fragile dreams. Personalized attention begins when someone knows a learner’s name, understands their story, and nurtures their dreams before the learner has the courage to speak them aloud.
Stories then followed, from a programme bringing girls from Turkana into education, a movement building courage in young women, a scholarship given to a student whose poor grades were never about ability, a mentorship that quietly reshaped a young man’s entire trajectory, etc.
None of these began with a big budget. Rather, each began with someone choosing to look more carefully. And here is why this matters for you.
Somewhere in your life at Strathmore, whether in a corridor conversation or a mentoring session, personalized attention has been lived. Perhaps you gave it, or perhaps you received it. Perhaps you witnessed it and didn’t quite have the words for what you saw.
So, what is your story? Look around you… look back. The evidence is already there, in the lives quietly transformed by attention, care, and the simple but radical act of seeing another person fully. Whatever the case may be, now is the time to put it down in writing and share it with others. Because transformative education does not begin with office policies or teaching techniques. It begins with presence, and it is already happening here.
