University life: Clubs, sports and academic gala

University life is a unique and transformative experience that marks a significant chapter in many people’s personal and academic journeys. It is a time of exploration, growth, and transition; where individuals often learn as much outside the classroom as they do within it. Beyond textbooks and lecture halls, campus life is where curiosity meets opportunity, and where students discover their talents, build lifelong friendships, and begin to define their identities.
At the core of university life is academics, where students delve deeply into their chosen fields, guided by professors who challenge their ideas and inspire them by opening doors to intellectual discovery and innovation. Yet, the magic of university is equally found beyond the classroom — in the vibrant world of clubs, sports, and shared experiences.

Among the most vibrant expressions of student life are extracurricular clubs and sports,  two pillars that define the spirit and energy of campus life and lie at the heart of any educational institution. From debate and the arts to rugby, basketball, and football, these platforms offer students a chance to explore their interests beyond academics. Clubs nurture leadership, teamwork, and creativity. They provide a space for self-expression and innovation, often becoming a second home for like-minded individuals.

On the evening of 30th June 2025, the Main Auditorium came alive with energy and pride as the Strathmore University Council hosted the Annual Clubs and Sports Gala. It was an evening dedicated to celebrating and honouring the dedication and accomplishments of strathletes and club members. The event kicked off with welcoming remarks from Mike Otieno, Strathmore University’s Sports Representative. He began by emphasizing that they were not just there to host an event, but to honour a journey, a journey marked by early morning training sessions, late-night meetings, losses that taught them valuable lessons, and victories that reminded them why they keep going. Speaking as their sports representative, he said it had been his greatest honour to walk alongside some of the most passionate, committed, and gifted individuals he had ever met: the athletes, club leaders, and every student who chose to show up.

“Let me be clear: today is about you, the footballer who continued practicing after everyone else had left, the debater who stayed up perfecting their argument, the rookie who found confidence this semester, the team that may not have lifted a trophy but never lost their spirit,” Otieno said. He went on to emphasize that excellence isn’t just about what the scoreboard says — it’s about effort, growth, and heart. They were not merely celebrating trophies, titles, or records; they were celebrating
the courage, commitment, and character of the student-athletes,  their ability to rise above challenges, push boundaries, and inspire those who watch them.

The next address was by the Dean of Students who started by applauding the exemplary performances and achievements of Strathmore athletes and club members. He expressed the kind of reaction this achievement evokes admitting that he gets goosebumps just thinking about what the Strathletes and club members have accomplished. He went on to commend the basketball team, applauding its efforts. Thanks to the team and its coach, Mr. Tony Ochieng, Strathmore University supplied the entire three-on-three basketball squad for the national team. He also highlighted the rugby team’s success, noting that the captain of the Kenyan national rugby team is a Strathmore University student, one George Ooro.
He also commended the students’ dress code, noting their choice of black with a touch of blue. After the Dean’s address, the  program continued with some entertainment, followed by the awards ceremony. Under the Sports category there were awards in the Rookie of the Year, a Captain’ Award, Coaches’ Award, Most Promising Player and Most Valuable Player. Under the Clubs category they awarded the clubs with the best Social Media presence, Most Rewarding Club, Most Promising Club, Business and Entrepreneurship and Leadership and Governance.

Then came remarks from the chief guest, Mr. Peter Gacheru. Mr. Gacheru is an accomplished sports administrator with extensive experience in international sports management. With a career spanning multiple decades, he has served in key roles within various international federations, contributing to the strategic growth and development of global sports. His expertise has been instrumental in successful planning and execution of three Olympic games, where he played a pivotal role in ensuring smooth operations and marketing activities.
Mr. Gacheru emphasized the need for sportsmen to revolutionize the sporting platform, where they are no longer viewed as incapable of exemplary academic performance, but as individuals capable of excelling across all fields and becoming well-rounded citizens. He also emphasized the need for sportsmen to use social media effectively in order to position themselves favorably in the minds of supporters and enhance monetization opportunities.
