Gathu emphasized the crucial role of online radio in promoting social causes, sparking conversations that drive change, and mobilizing communities. Gathu encouraged the Strathmore community to create impactful content that inspires future generations, stressing the importance of ethical storytelling and a unique station identity.
“Strath Hits needs an identity to make it stand out. Ethical storytelling will bridge diverse divides and connect us through insightful stories,” he said.
In response to Jimmy Gathu, Dr. Vincent Ogutu, Vice Chancellor of Strathmore University, affirmed that the radio will embody the university’s values of excellence and ethical practice. Dr. Ogutu shared his passion for journalism, highlighting its roots in ancient Athens and its evolution over time. He reminisced, “Journalism is delivering correct news and informing people objectively. My idea of journalism was reporting live on the ground.”
He hopes that Strath Hits will inform, educate, and entertain, leaving a lasting impact on society. “So much talent can be accommodated in radio. It is a platform to have significant impact, entertain, and have fun,” added Dr. Ogutu. .
Dr. Magdalene Dimba, Dean of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, (SHSS) where the radio is domiciled, expressed her joy and pride. “The launch of Strath Hits Radio has been a dream, and now that dream has come true. It is a milestone for the university,” she stated.
With its slogan, ‘On Air as One,’ Strath Hits aims to unite the Strathmore community, providing a platform for both students and staff to showcase their talents and ideas.
Dr. Arbogast Akidiva, Academic Director (SHSS) emphasized the strategic importance of the radio. “The radio is a strategic tool that the university community will use to impact society, shape the agenda, and showcase innovation and initiatives of the university,” he said. Strath Hits is set to become a vital medium for communication, education, and entertainment, reflecting the university’s commitment to excellence and ethical practice.
The launch hosted an insightful panel discussion on ‘The Agenda-Setting Role of Media in the Modern Era’. Moderated by Evans Ijakaa, the panel explored how media shapes public discourse and influences societal priorities. Dr. Vincent Ogutu emphasized the importance of balanced and objective reporting, stating, “Authenticity is key in delivering information.”
Andrea Wakori underscored the watchdog role of media and the need to maintain credibility and objectivity while covering niche stories. “We live in an age where we have a lot of information at our disposal. Strive to be the change you want to see,” she advised.
Jimmy Gathu added, “For the success of radio, you have to have a robust research team to bring about intellectual and factual conversations.”
The launch event celebrated the incredible team driving Strath Hits Radio, including Hezron Otieno, Andrea Wakori, Bakhita Mutua, Margaret Muthoni, Irene Owiti, Neville Omuga, Dr. Magdalene Dimba, Dr. Stephen Macharia, Dr. Arbogast Akidiva, Dr. Esther King’ori, and Dr. Beatrice Njeru.
