In every sense of the word—both in hospitality and tourism innovation and groundbreaking ideas—the 3rd edition of the Middle East & Africa (MEA) Future Leader Challenge (FLC) brought the industry’s brightest minds from far and wide together to reimagine what hospitality will look like in the next 20 years. Held at the Emirates Academy of Hospitality in Dubai from January 21–23, 2025, the event served up fresh perspectives and next-level concepts for the future of hospitality.
Kenya’s delegation to the MEA Finals received special support and recognition from Cabinet Secretary for Tourism, Hon. Rebecca Miano, who officially sent them off as they embarked on their journey to Dubai. Representing Strathmore University, School of Tourism and Hospitality Students , Ivy Wanyama, Imelda Nzioka, Mark Mutugi, and Harriet Kemunto proudly carried the country’s flag, ready to showcase their expertise and vision for the future of the industry.
But the journey to Dubai started months before. From October to December 2024, participants engaged in weekly virtual sessions—a creative space where students from across the Middle East and Africa collaborated, exchanged ideas, and built networks with industry professionals. These sessions weren’t just about competition; they were about co-creating the future of hospitality through mentorship, brainstorming, and teamwork. Through expert-led discussions and interactive challenges, students were pushed to think beyond borders, outside the box, and into the future. From tackling real-world hospitality challenges to designing innovative, sustainable, and tech-driven solutions, each session built momentum toward the grand finale in Dubai.
A transformative experience in Dubai
“The best way to predict the future is to create it!” And in Dubai, that’s exactly what the future leaders of the hospitality industry did! For a few action-packed days, participants immersed themselves in an unparalleled learning experience, gaining valuable insights, forging industry connections, and stepping into the global world of hospitality. From hands-on workshops to expert career coaching, they gained firsthand insights from world-class hospitality professionals, discovering what it truly takes to excel in the industry. But the experience didn’t stop there. With exclusive networking sessions and personalized mentorship, attendees connected with influential leaders and top recruiters who could shape their professional paths. One of the most thrilling moments was the Industry Recruitment Fair: a golden opportunity to meet potential employers from the world’s leading hospitality brands. Doors to exciting global careers swung open, offering participants a glimpse into their future. And then came the grand finale—the prestigious Walking Inn Talent Dinner. An extraordinary evening where participants dined with executives from the top four hospitality companies in the world.
And beyond that, participants explored Dubai’s rich heritage and iconic landmarks. From the towering Burj Khalifa to the historic Al Fahidi district, they experienced the city’s vibrant culture. Whether strolling through souks, admiring the architecture, or enjoying the desert’s beauty.
What’s Next?
The excitement doesn’t stop in Dubai! The Future Leaders Challenge continues with national editions taking place across the African region. Strathmore University is set to host the highly anticipated East Africa Future Leaders Challenge in Nairobi, Kenya, on April 14–15, 2025. This event will bring together top students from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, and beyond to present groundbreaking ideas, tackle industry challenges, and redefine the future of hospitality.
