Nawiri @ BCG 2025: Through the Eyes of a Fellow

    Share

The Nawiri @BCG 2025 Fellowship marked the fifth edition of a powerful partnership between the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and Strathmore University’s Schools of Mathematics (SIMS), Computing (SCES), and Business (SBS). Each year, twelve ambitious students step into a real-life simulation of consulting at one of the world’s top firms, structuring cases, testing hypotheses, and presenting polished decks before decision-makers from the private, public, and social sectors.

The program unfolds like a journey. It begins in April with an information session, followed by a competitive case challenge that doesn’t just test intellect but also presentation skills, quick thinking, and teamwork. From there, twelve students are selected as fellows. They receive training from BCG consultants, then spend eight weeks working on simulated cases. Each group is guided by two BCG project leaders who mentor them on everything—from scoping priorities and building workplans, to sharpening slides and defending assumptions under pressure. In September, the fellows graduate and interview for Visiting Associate roles. Successful applicants join BCG the following February, completing their Work-Based Learning (WBL) while experiencing life at a global consulting powerhouse.

For many, the fellowship is a gateway to opportunity. Some secure internships and even entry-level roles at BCG after graduation. But even for those who don’t go all the way, the benefits are immense. Students gain practical skills in Excel, PowerPoint, research, and communication; they also get a taste of the consulting lifestyle, networking with professionals including Strathmore alumni, who were once in their shoes. And, yes, the occasional tour of Nairobi and a celebratory meal make the experience even sweeter.

The numbers tell a powerful story. Since the first cohort in 2021, at least 11 Stratizens have landed roles at BCG, with others joining the firm independently of the program. Given the fierce competition—where only a handful of interns are selected from hundreds of global applicants—this is a remarkable success rate and a testament to the value of the partnership between Strathmore and BCG.

For me, being part of Nawiri @BCG 2025 was eye-opening. The professionalism, warmth, and brilliance of the people at BCG left me starstruck. From the thoughtful rejection emails to the incredible support and free resources shared during interview prep, the culture at BCG spoke volumes. I was especially inspired to see how many of the consultants guiding us were Strathmore alumni—a reminder that our dreams are closer than they sometimes appear.

I caught up with two fellow cohort members for their reflections. Elizabeth Wambui (Financial Engineering) encouraged future applicants to keep an open mind and grow their problem-solving skills early through projects and practice cases. Eric Koome (Financial Economics) emphasized the importance of hard work and commitment at every stage, from case competitions to interviews. Both agreed that the experience was demanding but deeply rewarding, an opportunity that shapes not just careers but character.

As a member of the 2025 cohort, I can confidently say the fellowship was one to savour. Until the next cohort, I leave you with BCG’s words: “Beyond is where we begin.”
