“I finally have some competition!” exclaimed Dr. Vincent Ogutu, Vice Chancellor of Strathmore University, when four-time World Champion and three-time Olympian Lornah Kiplagat committed to participating in the Strathmore University VC Run on May 25, 2024.
Kiplagat made this announcement while launching her Lorna Sports Coaching App at Strathmore University on May 17, 2024. The app, designed by Kiplagat, is an online running program focused on the holistic development of beginner and intermediate recreational runners.
“Our mission is to bring a unique blend of expertise in running, strength training, injury prevention, and nutrition to the forefront in Kenya. We are committed to empowering individuals to reach their peak performance and unlock their full potential,” said the four-time World Champion.
Dr. Ogutu expressed his gratitude to Kiplagat for choosing Strathmore University for the launch and praised the comprehensive nature of the app, especially for recreational runners.
“Some of us have a ‘running problem’ in the sense that we love to run. I am glad that the app is tailored to Kenyans and will be vital in improving the well-being of people,” said Dr. Ogutu.
He also provided an overview of the VC Run and its significance. “At Strathmore University, we offer merit scholarships for students who excel both academically and in sports. We also provide scholarships for financially underprivileged students. Fundraising initiatives such as the VC Run are instrumental in supporting these students.”
The launch event featured a panel discussion with veteran sports journalists Elias Makori and Chiko Lawi, three-time Olympian, Lornah Kiplagat, Sports Science and Medicine Specialist, Dr. Kiptolo Boit, Strathmore University Dean of Students, Paul Ochieng, and Kenyan media personality, Janet Mbugua. The panel discussed the importance of the app in the Kenyan context and its role in helping recreational runners achieve their full potential correctly.
Kiplagat’s participation in the fourth edition of the VC Run adds significant momentum to the event. Dr. Ogutu, the VC Run champion, is assured of excellent company. Echoing Kiplagat’s words, let us lace up our shoes and run towards uplifting the Strathmore community through scholarships for financially underprivileged students, one stride at a time.
In the past, Kiplagat has designed and outfitted the Strathmore University Girls’ Hockey Team, the Scorpions, through her Lorna Sports African Sportswear brand.
