The Junia University Exchange Program marked a historic milestone for Strathmore University, sending its first cohort of students to the French institution. Among the participants was Kathembo Tsongo Dieudonne, a Bachelor of Business Information Technology (BBIT) student, awaiting graduation in June 2025. In an exclusive interview, Kathembo shared insights into his journey, blending academic excellence with cultural immersion.
“I felt an extreme sense of joy and disbelief,” Kathembo began, reflecting on his initial reaction to being selected. Having never envisioned such an opportunity, he described it as a blessing that brought immense happiness. This sense of gratitude set the tone for his entire experience, highlighting the importance of staying open to unforeseen opportunities.
Junia University’s community left an indelible mark on Kathembo. “The warmth and friendliness of the staff and students were evident from the beginning,” he noted. Despite the predominantly French-speaking environment, the university’s emphasis on bilingualism facilitated a smoother transition for international students. Orientation sessions in English and the “Buddy” program, where local students mentor international newcomers, eased cultural and academic integration.
Kathembo’s fears about the academic rigor quickly dissipated. “My preparation at Strathmore was sufficient to manage the coursework at Junia,” he observed. Junia’s teaching methodology, balancing lectures with hands-on practical sessions, stood out. This approach enabled students to apply theoretical knowledge immediately, enhancing engagement and understanding.
Interacting with peers from over 100 countries initially proved challenging. Many students gravitated toward familiar groups based on origin or cultural similarities. Despite this, Kathembo forged connections through collaborative activities and group projects. “By the second month, I had built friendships with students from diverse countries such as Pakistan, Ukraine, India, and Mexico,” he shared.
The program imparted invaluable lessons in time management and prioritization. Kathembo’s focus on completing assignments before indulging in travel ensured a balanced and fulfilling experience. Academically, he deepened his knowledge in machine learning, Java OOP, Python’s Django framework, and data visualization using R. “The lecturers’ availability and willingness to clarify concepts motivated me to explore further,” he said.
This exchange shaped Kathembo’s understanding of global collaboration and cultural diversity. He learned the value of leveraging differences to foster innovation and mutual growth. Despite initial challenges, the program underscored the potential of cross-cultural teamwork and its role in creating meaningful connections.
Kathembo’s advice to aspiring participants is clear: “Maintain self-discipline and determination.” Balancing academic and personal responsibilities ensures the opportunity’s full benefits. “Experiencing life outside your comfort zone offers invaluable lessons and opens doors to new opportunities,” he emphasized.
The Junia University Exchange Program not only enriched Kathembo’s academic journey but also fostered personal growth and cultural awareness. As he prepares for graduation, the experience serves as a testament to the invaluable experience of international education and the value of embracing diversity.
