Introducing Sunsafe: Empowering Kenya’s Solar Revolution

    Share

Component-Based Solar PV Systems (CBSS) are revolutionizing energy access in Kenya, particularly in remote areas where traditional grid expansion is impractical. The off-grid solar market has seen remarkable growth, providing a cost-effective solution amidst rising energy costs, while extending electricity access to underserved communities.

However, the effectiveness of CBSS hinges on proper system design and installation. Without adequate knowledge, misconfigured systems can pose safety risks. Bridging this gap is crucial for ensuring safe and reliable electricity solutions across the country.

Enter Sunsafe, an innovative application designed to revolutionize the deployment of CBSS. Developed to aid consumers, retailers, and sellers, Sunsafe simplifies system sizing and compatibility checks. By providing accessible information, the app empowers users to ensure CBSS installations are safe and efficient.

Currently undergoing pilot testing in Machakos and Makueni counties, Sunsafe is a collaborative effort involving key partners including Evonet Energy Ltd (UK), Strathmore UNESCO Chair on Climate Change Resilience and Sustainability, Intelligent Technologies Ltd (Kenya), and Gamos East Africa (Kenya). Funded by Innovate UK – Energy Catalyst 9, Sunsafe aims to democratize access to reliable solar power.

The app’s impact extends beyond technical support; it promises to transform how standalone solar systems are adopted and maintained in Kenya. By promoting proper system configurations, Sunsafe not only enhances safety but also maximizes the efficiency and longevity of solar installations.
