How Edwike Nyauncho Is Using Artificial Intelligence to Strengthen Climate Resilience

Working at the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) exposed Edwike Nyauncho to some of the world’s most pressing environmental challenges and inspired her to explore how technology could become part of the solution.

Through her work at UNEP, Edwike gained first-hand exposure to the growing impacts of climate change, biodiversity loss, and the increasing role of digital technologies in supporting better environmental decision-making. That experience reshaped her perspective and ultimately inspired her to pursue advanced studies in Computing and Information Systems.

That realisation inspired her to pursue a Master of Science in Computing and Information Systems (MCIS) at Strathmore University, where she set out to deepen her expertise in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and data analytics, not simply to understand emerging technologies, but to use them to solve real-world problems.

Although Edwike had built a career supporting digital platforms at UNEP, the programme fundamentally changed how she viewed technology.

Before joining Strathmore, she saw information systems primarily as tools for storing and managing information. Through the programme, she discovered their far greater potential.

“When combined with quality data and Artificial Intelligence, information systems become engines for intelligence and innovation.”

Courses in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Science, and Emerging Trends in Computing challenged her to think beyond maintaining digital systems to designing intelligent solutions that anticipate problems before they occur.

Equally valuable were the lecturers who encouraged her to connect academic research with practical impact.

Her supervisor, Dr. Paul Macharia, continually challenged her to focus on solving real societal problems rather than pursuing research for its own sake, while other lecturers inspired her to build strong technical foundations, think critically, and strive for excellence.

For Edwike, Strathmore’s influence extended beyond the classroom.

“The University shaped not only my technical skills but also my character and professional mindset.”

As climate-related disasters become more frequent and severe, timely and accurate information has never been more important.

Inspired by her work at UNEP and Kenya’s growing need for localised climate intelligence, Edwike focused her research on strengthening disaster preparedness through Artificial Intelligence.

Her thesis, AI-Driven Climate Risk Mapping and Early Warning Alerts for Kenya: A Case Study of Elgeyo Marakwet County, explored how machine learning can generate localised climate risk predictions to support earlier and better-informed decisions.

Using climate data from the Kenya Meteorological Department alongside drought indicators, she developed a prototype that combines Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) forecasting with Random Forest classification to predict climate risks and generate early warning information.

The results demonstrated the potential of AI in strengthening climate resilience. The Random Forest model achieved approximately 93 percent classification accuracy, while the forecasting model successfully predicted rainfall patterns with low error rates.

Yet one of her most important discoveries was not about algorithms.

“I discovered that the quality and locality of data often influence AI performance more than model complexity.”

For Edwike, this reinforced a fundamental lesson: successful Artificial Intelligence begins with good data.

Beyond the technical results, he hopes the concepts demonstrated in her research can inform future work by organisations such as the National Drought Management Authority, the Kenya Meteorological Department, county governments, and humanitarian agencies seeking to strengthen localised forecasting and improve disaster preparedness.

Completing a master’s degree while working full-time at UNEP demanded discipline, careful planning, and resilience.

There were periods when international meetings, project deadlines, coursework, and research all competed for her attention. Evenings, weekends, and public holidays often became opportunities to study, analyse data, and write.

At times, it felt like balancing two full-time careers.

Looking back, however, she sees those challenges as some of the programme’s greatest lessons.

“The journey taught me that success is not simply about knowledge or ability. It is about resilience, discipline, and perseverance.”

The dissertation, in particular, transformed her.

Unlike coursework, research demanded independence, patience, and the willingness to keep moving forward despite uncertainty. It taught her to trust the research process and embrace continuous learning qualities that continue to shape both her professional and personal life.

For Edwike, graduation is not the conclusion of her journey but the beginning of a much larger mission.

She hopes to continue working at the intersection of Artificial Intelligence, climate resilience, and sustainable development, transforming research into practical solutions that help governments and communities prepare for the future.

She also aspires to pursue doctoral studies, mentor future innovators, and contribute to an Africa where homegrown technology addresses local challenges with globally competitive solutions.

Above all, she hopes her work inspires others to see research differently.

“I hope my work demonstrates that research should not end on a library shelf but should evolve into solutions that improve people’s lives.”

For Edwike Nyauncho, the master’s degree is a reminder that curiosity, purpose, and perseverance can transform technology into a force for protecting communities and shaping a more resilient future.
