Exploring the World of Cybersecurity with Tsholofelo Mashego

On Friday, 12th June 2026, the Statistics and Data Science students from the Strathmore Institute of Mathematical Sciences (SIMS), enrolled in the Information Security, IT Governance, and Cloud Computing class had the privilege of attending a guest lecture organized by their lecturer Kiama Mutahi. Considering cybersecurity is a key component of their academic programme, the session provided a valuable opportunity to bridge the gap between classroom theory and real-world industry practice.

The guest speaker, Ms. Tsholofelo Mashego, an accomplished cybersecurity professional serving as Africa Enterprise Customer Success Manager at KnowBe4 and formerly associated with Mimecast, shared her extensive industry experience and offered valuable insights into the ever-evolving cybersecurity landscape. Her presentation aimed to expose students to the real cybersecurity threats faced by organizations and prepare them for the realities of the professional world beyond the classroom.

The lecture focused primarily on email security gateways and security awareness, two critical areas of modern cybersecurity. Students learned how email remains one of the most common attack vectors and explored the journey an email takes from sender to recipient. Ms. Mashego explained the various stages involved, including email clients, SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) checks, internet service providers (ISPs), MX (Mail eXchange) lookups, security checks, and the processes that determine whether an email is delivered to an inbox or filtered into spam.

In addition, the session introduced key concepts such as data archiving through Mimecast, cloud technologies like Amazon Web Services (AWS), and phishing-prone percentages, which measure how susceptible individuals and organizations are to phishing attacks. These topics highlighted the importance of combining technological solutions with user awareness to create a secure digital environment.

One of the most thought-provoking discussions centered on the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in cybersecurity. The lecture explored how AI can be exploited through sophisticated phishing campaigns and deepfakes that are increasingly difficult to detect. At the same time, AI is becoming a powerful tool for cybersecurity professionals by enabling faster threat detection, automated responses, and enhanced security monitoring.

Beyond the technical content, Ms. Mashego’s engaging delivery and enthusiasm made the session particularly memorable. She encouraged active participation, welcomed questions, and provided practical insights drawn from her professional experience. Her dynamic presentation style fostered an atmosphere of curiosity and highlighted the diverse career opportunities available within cybersecurity and related fields.

The lecture also underscored the growing importance of data privacy and cybersecurity in an increasingly data-driven world. As organizations continue to rely on data for decision-making and innovation, protecting information has become a critical responsibility for technology professionals across all disciplines.

The session was both educational and inspiring, leaving attendees with a deeper appreciation of cybersecurity and its vital role in creating a safer digital future.
