At a time when educational reform has become a global imperative, eMsingi has reached a monumental milestone, being selected by HundrED and VVOB as one of the world’s top 15 innovations from a competitive  pool of 452 groundbreaking submissions. This prestigious recognition is a defining chapter in our twelve-year journey dedicated to dismantling the barriers that have long separated lower-income students from the high-quality education they deserve. By securing its place on this global stage, eMsingi has proven that its vision is more than a local success story: it is a definitive, scalable blueprint for a fairer future across the Global South. The seeds of this impact were planted in 2012 at Strathmore University’s Community Service Centre. Through a project called Macheo, dedicated Strathmore students proved their model by engaging 150 students annually in Nairobi’s most marginalized communities, including the Kibera, Mukuru, and Kangemi slums. They realized that “isolated interventions” weren’t enough—real change required addressing barriers like mental health, parental engagement, and teacher support simultaneously.

In 2019, this vision expanded with Project TAI, which successfully scaled the model to reach 5,000 students annually in rural Kitui. These years of groundwork revealed a stark reality: nearly half of teachers lacked digital training, and counselor-to-student ratios were an overwhelming 1:218. These challenges became the catalyst for innovation, leading to the birth of eMsingi—a  digital platform that now takes this proven approach across Africa.

At the core of eMsingi’s global recognition is the ability to bridge the “opportunity gap.” By integrating digital literacy into the curriculum, eMsingi connects under-resourced schools with  networks and high-quality learning environments. Through this access  students from marginalized backgrounds gain invaluable exposure to advanced simulations and university-level mentorship. This exposure shifts their mindset from “I can’t” to “I belong” a transformation that global experts identified as a gold standard for educational equity. Beyond students, the platform creates a space where teachers from various economic backgrounds interact as peers, sharing best practices and trauma-informed teaching strategies. This ensures that even in low-connectivity areas, teachers and parents are no longer “disconnected” but are part of a thriving community of practice.

The award celebrates the staggering, quantifiable success eMsingi has achieved through its evolution:

  • 12 Years of Transformation: From urban slums to rural counties and beyond.
  • 1 million Students Reached: A milestone reflecting a massive shift in the educational landscape.
  • 24,000 Students Annually: The current pace of impact via the eMsingi digital platform.
  • 500,000 Teachers Trained: A global reach that empowers those at the front of the classroom.

This global recognition from HundrED and VVOB shines a spotlight on a simple truth: sustainable transformation requires a “whole-school” ecosystem. By standing out among 452 entries, eMsingi has proven that we can build an education system that is truly inclusive. This award is a powerful endorsement of a movement that ensures every student has a fair shot at success.
