Financial Engineering, a course known by few, often conjures images of complex mathematical models and sophisticated financial strategies. Offered at the Strathmore Institute of Mathematical Sciences, it melds finance, mathematics, computing and business into a dynamic and challenging programme. For Bridget Andiva, it was an unexpected choice that led to an extraordinary journey of growth and achievement.

Bridget, an alumna who graduated in June 2024 with a degree in Financial Engineering, reflects on her journey as a story of unexpected twists, mentorship, and relentless determination. Her path to Strathmore University began unexpectedly. Fresh out of high school with an impressive A, she found herself at a crossroads, uncertain about her next steps. Her parents encouraged her to study medicine, and she was accepted at the University of Nairobi. However, Bridget wasn’t entirely convinced that this was the right path for her.

While waiting for university to start, Bridget enrolled in a short CPA course at Strathmore University. “It was just something to keep me busy as I figure out my next step…to do after high school,” she recalls. However, this decision would set the stage for her future. Strathmore announced scholarships for students with top grades, and Bridget saw an opportunity. She applied, was accepted, and began to explore all that Strathmore had to offer.

Her journey toward selecting a course began with attending the open day at Strathmore, where she explored the wide range of courses available. This was followed by tours of various schools and meetings with some of the deans to gain deeper insights. Finally, a meeting with Sellah Shimwenyi, a family friend, mentor and former Strathmore employee offered crucial insight and directed her decision-making. “She apprised of the range of courses offered, with a deeper dive into the Strathmore Institute on Mathematical Sciences. Needless to say, Financial Engineering caught my attention” Bridget explains.

The first year was particularly challenging. “Everything was online, and it was hard to form connections,” She recalls. Despite the isolation and the demanding coursework, she pushed through. By her second year, she had found her footing. “I started forming bonds and finding my group. Furthermore my parents had gained a clearer understanding of the course and expressed strong support for it playing a crucial role in encouraging me to always strive for excellence.” She notes.

Her third year marked a turning point. With newfound stability, Bridget excelled, culminating in achieving a first-class degree. “Things looked bare at times, but I managed to turn everything around,” she says with a sense of accomplishment.

Mentorship played a crucial role in Bridget’s journey. She values the advice and guidance from her school-assigned mentor, Mercy Kano, who played a crucial role in her journey. The mentor’s insights on goal-setting and consistency not only motivated her but also pushed her to step out of her comfort zone. This support was instrumental in her pursuit of first-class honors, transforming her academic aspirations into reality. She also says that the informal guidance from her friends was invaluable, and the supportive environment at Strathmore fostered her growth. “The lecturers set high standards and genuinely cared about our development,” she notes. The University’s emphasis on real-world opportunities further enriched her experience. She participated in the Chartered Financial Analyst Challenge, joined the UN Club and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Hub, and even performed in the dance club on cultural day. “These activities made my time at Strathmore enjoyable and fulfilling,” she says. One of her standout experiences was a school trip to Singapore and Malaysia. “It was amazing,” she enthuses. This international exposure added a unique dimension to Bridget’s education, giving her a global perspective that she carries into her career.

Her biggest highlight at the University, she says, was attending a mentorship program in Tigoni for leaders. During the program, they were mentored on leadership, femininity, goal setting, hard work, and many other topics. Afterward, she joined a team that organized a charity event and set up a mentorship program for Kolongoni Primary School in Kilifi. They worked with eighth-grade students who were preparing for their national exams, helping them with revision on various subjects for a week. “This experience stood out to me because it allowed me to give back to the community.” She says.

Currently, Bridget is thriving in the consulting world having kickstarted her career at McKinsey and credits this to the preparation and exposure gained from Strathmore preparation. “Strathmore equipped me with the skills I needed to excel,” she says. As she looks to the future, Bridget plans to continue learning and growing in consulting, with aspirations for further education. Her journey is a testament to the power of perseverance, mentorship, and seizing opportunities. Her  story is a powerful reminder to embrace challenges and seek out opportunities. For prospective students, she offers this advice: “Strathmore is the right decision because of the exposure and opportunities it offers. But you have to take these opportunities. Be involved and find your group of people who motivate you to achieve more.”

Bridget’s journey from uncertainty to achievement is an inspiring narrative of resilience and success, a story that will undoubtedly inspire many in the Strathmore community and beyond.
