For Samantha Mumbi, pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Communication at Strathmore University was never simply about earning a degree. It was about discovering the best way to serve communities and create meaningful impact through communication. “I’ve always known I wanted to work in a space that directly serves people,” she says. “I realised that clear, strategic communication is at the heart of any successful community initiative. Studying this field allowed me to learn how to elevate community voices, design outreach strategies, and turn complex ideas into stories that drive action.”

Looking back on her years at Strathmore, Samantha describes her university experience as transformative, not only academically but also personally. “What I appreciate most about Strathmore is its holistic approach to education. It isn’t just about academic knowledge, but about instilling critical thinking, philosophical grounding, self-discipline, and strong core values,” she reflects. “Overall, my journey at Strathmore hasn’t just earned me a degree; it has fundamentally shaped how I think, how I see the world, and how I show up for others.”

Before joining the University, Samantha admits that she held the common misconception that Strathmore was exclusively a university for wealthy students. However, that perception quickly changed once she became part of the community. “The campus is rich with people from all walks of life, different backgrounds, and diverse cultures. Seeing such a vibrant mix of perspectives come together seamlessly was incredible.” She also credits the University’s lecturers for creating an environment where students felt valued beyond the classroom. “It wasn’t unusual for a lecturer to pause a class to share an essential life skill or notice when someone had been absent for a few days and check in on their well-being. That level of personal care made us feel truly seen.”

Among the many milestones she achieved, Samantha is particularly proud of successfully completing and presenting her fourth-year research project, describing it as the culmination of everything she had learned during her studies. One lecturer who left a lasting impression on her was Dr Beatrice Njeru. Samantha says Dr Njeru transformed how she approached presentations by emphasising confidence, clarity, structure, professionalism, and punctuality. “Beyond the course content, Dr Njeru taught me respect for other people’s time, accountability, and the importance of showing up fully prepared. Those lessons are something I’ll carry with me throughout my career.”

Like many students, Samantha also faced challenges during her university journey. Public speaking initially made her anxious, especially when presenting before an audience. Instead of avoiding the challenge, she chose to confront it.“Strathmore’s emphasis on continuous presentations forced me out of my comfort zone,” she explains. “I started preparing systematically by mastering my material early, rehearsing my delivery, and focusing on sharing valuable information instead of performing. Over time, that anxiety transformed into confidence.”

She believes one of the greatest lessons she learned at Strathmore is that excellence extends beyond academic performance. “Excellence is built on discipline, human connection, and how you show up for others. University is much more than getting good grades or earning a degree.” Her confidence also grew significantly throughout her studies. Although she still considers herself naturally reserved, she has learned to embrace opportunities with greater assurance. “Having solid knowledge gives you a distinct kind of confidence. When you know why you’re doing something and how to do it, the self-doubt fades away. The Work-Based Learning experience proved that everything we learned in class was directly applicable in the real world.” Among the many memories she made at Strathmore, Samantha describes the University’s international academic trip as the highlight of her student experience.

“Having the chance to travel to a different continent and experience communication from an international perspective was unforgettable. It expanded my horizons and made me appreciate the true reach of what we do as communicators.” After graduation, Samantha hopes to begin her professional journey in the communications sector, particularly within organisations focused on social impact and global development. She believes Strathmore has equipped her with both the practical and strategic skills needed to succeed. “My time at Strathmore equipped me with the practical tools, digital communication skills, and strategic mindset needed to make a real difference.”

Looking further ahead, Samantha hopes to build a career that combines communication with meaningful social change. “I want to build a career that bridges clear, empathetic communication with meaningful social change.” As she prepares to graduate, Samantha encourages current students to embrace every opportunity the University offers. “Lean into the journey,” she advises. “Strathmore gives you the exact tools you need for the real world. Take advantage of every opportunity, especially real-world experiences that expand your perspective. Most importantly, treasure your lecturers and classmates. You’re part of an incredible community; learn from each other, support one another, and trust the process.” Summing up her years at Strathmore in one sentence, Samantha says, “My Strathmore experience was a transformative journey that pushed me out of my comfort zone.” As she joins the University’s graduating class, Samantha leaves with far more than a qualification. She departs with renewed confidence, practical communication skills, lifelong friendships, and a clear purpose: using communication as a force for positive social impact.
