What struck me the most was when Dr. Wahome Ngare said that "women can get a PhD at any age, but women cannot have children after a certain age". We live in a world where everyone is in competition to have the highest level of education at a young age, in a world where millennials are seeking instant gratification for their material accomplishments. We neglect the opportunities that we have to raise the next generation, often assuming that we will still be in good health or that we will live long such that even if we postpone the opportunity to start a family, we are guaranteed that we will be able to have children let alone them being healthy. We are living in a fast paced world full of noise that blocks out our own judgment, we go with the flow which has no limits, no guiding values and thus, we are going nowhere fast.

It stood out for me that “Differences are not distances,” as regards couples with different temperaments. “If you have to speak: You don’t have to shout! Do it in gentleness,” about communication in the family. Some advice; a secret to a husband: as a husband, you need to “be good to your children”-in a sense- if you expect your wife to “smile” at you. It’s clear to me “the notion of having few children based on economic-capacity excuses is a myth.” It came to me as a general observation “The best way of raising one child, is by having two; while the best way of raising two, is by having three…” We need to talk of unity and love in a family well; in addition, the extended family is indispensable; therefore, one needs to bear in mind not to treat one’s “in-laws” as if they are “out-laws.”

The discussion marked a key hallmark for my life, it was more than just an evening of intellectual talk but captured the core of who I am. The key lesson for me was understanding my body as a key part in understanding my sexuality. I was also challenged that my faith can be hinged on core principles that are universally true and touch on my value as a young woman. This is because I’ve learnt more about my body as a lady in terms of understanding my sexuality and my devotion to Christ. I am better equipped in establishing boundaries and trust I am predisposed to make better decisions in my relationships with this new information. I am glad that one of the speakers elaborately detailed the role of youth in the family as the next generation and the importance of staying within God’s expectation for my benefit and those around me as I purpose to walk in purity leading to marriage.
