Strathmore University heralds a new era of sustainable energy solutions with the launch of the Africa Green Hydrogen Hub on April 11th, 2024. In collaboration with Curtin University and Griffith University, Australia, this pioneering initiative is in perfect alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy) and SDG 13 (Climate Action); and demonstrates the hub’s commitment to green hydrogen technology which is poised to revolutionize energy accessibility and combat climate change.

Recognizing hydrogen’s pivotal role as a renewable energy carrier, the hub prioritizes green hydrogen production, leveraging renewable sources like solar and wind power. Positioned at the forefront of clean energy technology advancement across Africa, this initiative aligns seamlessly with global endeavours to combat climate change and reduce carbon emissions.

Her Excellency, Jenny Da Rin, Australian High Commission Kenya said the launch exemplifies the power of international cooperation.

“There is enormous potential in green hydrogen, yet unlocking and commercializing its potential demands innovation and collective action.  That’s why this partnership is so critical. It is also emblematic of the significant potential in energy cooperation between Australia and East Africa,” said the Australian High Commissioner.

The Africa Green Hydrogen Hub at Strathmore University serves as a nexus for research, innovation, and collaboration, bringing together stakeholders from diverse backgrounds including researchers, educators, policymakers, and industry leaders. Together, they explore the transformative potential of hydrogen technology in various sectors such as transportation, industry, and power generation.

Dr. Vincent Ogutu, Vice Chancellor, Strathmore University, hailed the launch as a significant milestone towards sustainable energy solutions. He expressed gratitude to Curtin University and Griffith University for choosing Strathmore University as a worthy collaborator and acknowledged that, “as a university we are ready to create capacity within Africa, preparing individuals to thrive in this emerging space. We eagerly anticipate the research contributions stemming from the hub and are prepared to engage in collaboration with academic counterparts and peers across the continent.”

In the face of pressing challenges surrounding energy security, environmental sustainability, and economic development, the Africa Green Hydrogen Hub stands as a beacon of hope, set to address these challenges head-on. This initiative has the potential to boost sustainable development and drive Africa’s energy transition forward. It also aims to develop local skills and stimulate economic growth in renewable energy.

Giving his remarks, Prof. Izael Da Silva, Deputy Vice Chancellor, Research and Innovation, Strathmore University, noted that the launch of the hub has come at an opportune time as it presents an opportunity to drive impactful change through innovative solutions, paving the way for a more Sustainable Future.
