When Nicole finished high school, she knew one thing for certain, she wanted to pursue a course that involved Mathematics and would challenge her intellectually. She did not, however, know exactly where that path would take her. After much consultation and exploration, Actuarial Science emerged as a strong possibility, and Strathmore Institute of Mathematical Sciences (SIMS) stood out for the rigour of its programme, its reputation and the opportunities it offered beyond the classroom.

The decision became even easier when she was awarded a 100% merit scholarship. The scholarship was more than financial support, it was an opportunity to pursue her ambitions at Strathmore and begin what would become a transformative chapter of her life. Her Bachelor of Business Science in Actuarial Science journey was demanding. The programme constantly challenged her to learn new concepts and understand how decisions could be reached through theoretical and mathematical reasoning. She particularly enjoyed the opportunity to explore different areas of knowledge, from business strategy to global economic and financial systems.

But university life was about more than numbers, formulas and coursework. Some of Nicole’s favourite memories were the ordinary moments she shared with her classmates, many of whom eventually became close friends. Between classes, the Student Centre became a familiar meeting point where they would share meals, chat, play card games and simply enjoy each other’s company. Sometimes, they would make their way to Mama’s Pot for bhajia or fries, which cost just Ksh 70 at the time. These seemingly small moments became some of the memories she treasures most.

Then came London. The trip gave Nicole an opportunity to network with SIMS alumni and visit institutions such as British International Investment. It was during this experience that she was introduced to development finance and impact investing, areas that would later contribute to her growing interests and ambitions. The trip was also personal. London had always been a dream destination for Nicole, and being able to explore the city with friends made the experience even more special. There was plenty of adventure along the way, including getting lost while exploring the city and coming dangerously close to missing their flight home. It was a fitting reflection of Nicole’s university experience: structured and demanding, but also filled with curiosity, friendship and unexpected discoveries.

Of course, the journey came with its fair share of challenges. Getting to 8 a.m. classes on time was one of them, but the more serious challenge was keeping up with the intensity of the programme. Units involving programming pushed her beyond her comfort zone, while group projects and assignments sometimes meant very late nights and very early mornings. There were moments of frustration, but those experiences ultimately became some of her most valuable lessons. Nicole learned the importance of grit and resilience and discovered that growth often comes from being placed in situations that are uncomfortable and unfamiliar. The support of her lecturers and mentor, Dr. Irene Ngunjiri, also helped her navigate some of the more difficult moments.

The challenges did not stop her from excelling. Her hard work was recognised when she was awarded first place in SIMS during the Academic Gala for the 2023/2024 academic year. Alongside the scholarship that enabled her to study at Strathmore, the award remains one of her proudest achievements. More importantly, her time at Strathmore broadened her understanding of where her interests could take her. She entered university drawn to Mathematics but developed a growing interest in risk management, finance, investments, economics, ESG and sustainability. Her exposure to development finance and impact investing further shaped her desire to explore how these fields can contribute to environmental, social and economic outcomes.

Nicole hopes to build a career at the intersection of risk management, sustainable finance, development finance and investments. She is also considering pursuing a Master’s degree in Economics to deepen her understanding of economic systems. For now, however, she remains open to where her journey may lead. “God’s plans are greater than man’s,” she says, acknowledging that her future may take her in an unexpected direction.

Her advice to students beginning their Strathmore journey is equally grounded in her own experience, start working hard from first year. She encourages students to develop good academic habits early rather than waiting until their final years. At the same time, she believes university should extend beyond academics. Joining clubs, participating in sports, taking part in Community Outreach Programmes, entering competitions and pursuing leadership opportunities can build valuable skills, friendships and networks. She also emphasises the importance of taking notes in class and, above all, finding a strong support system. “Do not suffer alone,” she advises. Advice that reflects her own experience. The demanding coursework, the late nights and the moments of uncertainty were easier to navigate because she had people around her who could offer guidance, encouragement and empathy.

Nicole came to Strathmore looking for an intellectually challenging course that would put her love for Mathematics to work. She leaves with more than a degree, friendships, resilience, new perspectives and a clearer sense of the impact she hopes to make. The numbers may have drawn her to Actuarial Science, but her journey at Strathmore has shown her that they can lead somewhere much bigger.
