The School of Computing and Engineering Sciences (SCES) recently hosted an insightful guest lecture titled “Medicine in Space: What We Do at NASA,” delivered by Dr. Deepak. Dr. Deepak is a distinguished physician, radiologist, educator, and researcher with more than three decades of experience in medical imaging and healthcare innovation. In addition to his clinical and academic work, Dr. Bedi serves as a consultant to NASA, where he contributes to research on astronaut health and the effects of microgravity on the human body. The session brought together students, faculty, and staff eager to learn about the fascinating intersection of healthcare, technology, and space exploration.
During the lecture, Dr. Bedi provided an engaging introduction to the field of space medicine, highlighting the unique health challenges astronauts face during space missions. He explained how the human body responds to microgravity, prolonged isolation, and radiation exposure, while showcasing the innovative solutions developed by NASA to safeguard astronaut health.
A significant focus of the presentation was the use of ultrasound technology aboard spacecraft. Dr. Bedi described how astronauts are trained to perform medical scans on themselves while specialists on earth provide remote guidance. Reflecting on the capabilities of modern astronauts, he noted that “these are the smartest people in the world, and really you can teach them to do anything, and they do it really well.”
The presentation also explored the role of emerging technologies in advancing healthcare both in space and on earth. Dr. Bedi discussed the evolution of portable ultrasound devices and how research conducted for space missions continues to influence medical innovation. He emphasized NASA’s commitment to problem-solving, observing that its scientists and engineers “will solve any problem for you that you give them” by clearly defining objectives and challenges.
One of the most fascinating aspects of the lecture was the discussion of health conditions that emerge during long-duration space missions. Dr. Bedi shared NASA’s ongoing research into blood clots, vision changes, and fluid shifts in the body caused by the absence of gravity. He explained that astronauts often experience dizziness when they first arrive in orbit and that changes in eye structure have become one of the most closely monitored medical concerns in spaceflight.
Looking toward the future, Dr. Bedi highlighted preparations for missions beyond earth’s orbit, including the possibility of human travel to Mars. While acknowledging the significant challenges involved, he said scientists are already developing solutions for food production, water supply, energy generation, and healthcare in deep space. “These guys are seriously planning for Mars,” he said, underscoring the long-term vision driving current research and innovation.
The interactive discussion that followed allowed participants to engage directly with Dr. Bedi, asking questions about careers in space medicine, technological advancements in healthcare, and the future of human space exploration. The session sparked curiosity and inspired students to consider the possibilities that emerge when science, technology, and medicine converge.
