On Saturday, September 13, 2025, Strathmore University played host to some of the brightest young minds in Kenya during the Strathmore National Mathematics Contest. Organized by the Strathmore University Admissions Office and the Strathmore Institute of Mathematical Sciences (SIMS), the event brought together 240 students from 13 high schools for a day of rigorous problem-solving and intellectual challenge.

At the end of the competition, two outstanding students emerged at the top. Justin Busolo of Alliance High School and Aliya Namwasi of Moi High School Kabarak were crowned the King and Queen of Mathematics 2025. Their reward is a deserving undergraduate scholarship to SIMS, each valued at approximately Kshs. 2.5 million.

For Aliya, this victory was a story of perseverance and determination. Having participated in the 2024 contest with disappointing results, she returned stronger and more prepared. “I scored low last year and made a vow to work harder and come back better. Today, I am proud to see that effort pay off,” she reflected.

Justin, too, credited preparation as the foundation of his success. “I have been preparing for this contest, and I am glad my efforts have borne fruit,” he said with satisfaction.

Beyond individual winners, the contest also highlighted school-wide achievements. Kabare Girls High School took the top spot in the girls’ category, Alliance High School led in the boys’ category, while Sheikh Khalifa from Mombasa triumphed among mixed schools. These results underscored the breadth of talent and commitment to excellence across different institutions.

The event also featured a keynote by Dr. Godfrey Madigu, Dean, SIMS, who emphasized the critical role of mathematics in the modern world. “It is impossible to live without mathematics. In the era of AI and smart technology, mathematics drives everything. If you want to thrive in today’s job market, you must embrace mathematics. It offers endless opportunities,” he told the students.

Reflecting on the day, Fenuel Kalulu, Admissions Manager, Strathmore University, described the contest as a celebration of both talent and opportunity. “As these young winners take confident steps toward their dreams, Strathmore University remains steadfast in its mission to nurture potential, open doors of opportunity, and inspire the pursuit of academic excellence,” he said.

According to Kalulu, the 2025 National Mathematics Contest was a platform to showcase brilliance, resilience, and the life-changing power of education. For Justin and Aliya, the crowns they wear represent the beginning of promising academic journeys.
