Cindy Jeruto’s Journey of Purpose and Perseverance

When Cindy Jeruto first became interested in cybersecurity, it wasn’t because she wanted to learn how to hack systems or chase the latest technology trends. It was because she kept seeing the consequences of an insecure digital system, people losing money through cybercrime, organisations struggling to recover from attacks, and growing uncertainty around the digital services millions rely on every day. I mean, I myself lost some money at some point.

She found herself asking a simple but powerful question: What can I do to make these systems more secure?

That question would lead her to Strathmore University, where she pursued a Master of Science in Information Systems Security, and eventually to research that explores how machine learning can strengthen the fight against evolving cyber threats.

“I wanted to contribute to protecting the digital systems that people rely on every day,” she says. “That curiosity gradually became purpose.”

Choosing Strathmore was a deliberate decision. After researching postgraduate programmes and speaking with alumni, Cindy was convinced that the university offered the academic rigor and learning environment she was looking for.

She expected the programme to be demanding, and it was.

Balancing a full-time job with coursework, research, and personal responsibilities required discipline, resilience, and more than a few sacrifices. Family gatherings were missed, personal plans postponed, and weekends often became study sessions. Yet through every challenge, she found support in her family, colleagues, lecturers, and classmates.

Looking back, she reflects on the experience with gratitude.

“I sacrificed two years of comfort to invest in a lifetime of opportunity.”

One of the defining moments of her academic journey came during the dissertation phase. Having recently changed jobs, she found herself mentally exhausted and seriously considered postponing her research.

Then an unexpected message shifted her perspective.

While scrolling through Instagram, she came across a simple reminder: “Finish what you started.”

Those words stayed with her. Combined with lessons she drew from Paulo Coelho’s The Manual of the Warrior of Light, they reminded her that every difficult step was part of a path she had willingly chosen.

Instead of giving up, she kept moving forward, one chapter, one experiment, and one milestone at a time.

For her research, Cindy tackled one of today’s most pressing cybersecurity challenges: detecting Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks on e-commerce platforms.

As digital commerce continues to expand, organisations increasingly depend on systems that must remain available around the clock. Traditional security tools often struggle to detect new or evolving attack patterns, particularly during periods of unusually high but legitimate traffic.

Determined to find a better approach, Cindy developed an ensemble machine learning framework that combines two algorithms, Isolation Forests and Autoencoders, to identify attacks in real time.

Rather than relying on a single model, her research demonstrated the value of combining different strengths to improve performance.

The results were encouraging. By allowing the two algorithms to complement one another, she achieved approximately a 39 percent improvement in detection performance compared to using either model independently.

Yet perhaps her greatest discovery wasn’t technical.

“I realised the best solutions rarely come from one perspective alone. They emerge when different strengths work together toward a common goal.”

The research process also taught her an important lesson about innovation. Failed experiments, disappointing results, and countless rounds of optimisation weren’t setbacks—they were essential parts of finding the right solution.

Beyond the technical achievements, Cindy believes cybersecurity is ultimately about protecting people.

Every secure payment, uninterrupted online service, and trusted digital platform strengthens confidence in the digital economy. As Kenya and the rest of Africa continue embracing digital transformation, she believes locally developed cybersecurity solutions will become increasingly important.

Rather than depending solely on imported technologies, she hopes more African researchers and professionals will build solutions designed for the continent’s unique challenges.

“Innovation should not only be imported, it should also be created here.”

She also believes universities have a critical role to play by producing graduates who understand not only technology, but also ethics, governance, policy, and the real-world impact of cybersecurity decisions.

Graduating with a master’s degree represents far more than an academic qualification for Cindy.

It is a testament to perseverance, faith, and the willingness to keep moving forward even when the journey becomes difficult.

Professionally, she hopes to continue developing cybersecurity solutions for African organisations, particularly within the financial sector. At the same time, she is considering pursuing a PhD or research fellowship to advance machine learning research and mentor the next generation of cybersecurity professionals.

For anyone considering a similar path, her advice is simple: let curiosity lead the way.

Because in the end, the letters “MSc” after her name tell only part of the story.

The greater achievement is becoming someone who chose to persevere, embraced every challenge as an opportunity to grow, and is committed to building a safer digital future, one solution at a time.
