Strathmore University, Institute of Mathematical Sciences (SIMS) Micro-credentials for Statistics
Background
Probability and statistics, the branches of mathematics concerned with the laws governing random events, including the collection, analysis, interpretation, and display of numerical data. The probability and statistics have a huge application nowadays in data science professions. The professionals use the statistics to do the modelling and predictions. For example, in business, it helps to predict the future profit or loss that can be attained by the company.
Given the importance of this course, Strathmore Institute of Mathematical Sciences (SIMS) intends to equip the upcoming data science enthusiasts with skills sets that will enable them fit to pursue a career in data science. This 8-week training will introduce the key concepts in probability and statistics and their applications in model building and predictions. This course is designed to help learners with limited knowledge of probability and statistics to accelerate its understanding with respect to data science.
Objective
The objective of this short course is to equip participants with knowledge and skills on how to explore the concepts of probability and statistics by understanding data and data sources and building inferential models as well as broadening its application in data science.
Course structure
The course will cover among others, the following topics:
- Descriptive statistics
- Probabilities and conditional probabilities
- Bayes Theorem
- Maximum likelihood estimation
- Hypothesis testing and Likelihood ratio tests
Eligibility
All those who are interested in pursuing career in Data Science and Quantitative Data Analysis. The applications will be reviewed by a selection committee whose decisions based on the strength of applications will be final.
Cost
The cost for this 8-weeks training is Ksh 60,000

Background
Algebra is a branch of mathematics that deals with finding the values of the unknown variable by solving linear, cubic or quadratic equations that are termed as algebraic equations whereas Calculus is a branch of mathematics that deals with the rate of change of functions. Calculus and algebra have a huge application nowadays in data science and other fields.
The professionals use the concepts in algebra and calculus to develop models that allow for predictions and prescriptions. Given the importance of this course, Strathmore Institute of Mathematical Sciences (SIMS) intends to equip the upcoming professionals in the fields of financial modelling, data science, statistics and biomathematics with skills sets that will enable them fit to pursue these careers. This 8-week training will introduce the key concepts in algebra and calculus and their applications in model building and predictions.

Background
Many systems evolve over time with an inherent amount of randomness. The purpose of this course is to develop and analyze probability models that capture the salient features of the system under study to predict the short- and long-term effects that this randomness will have on the systems under consideration. The study of probability models for stochastic processes involves a broad range of mathematical and computational tools. This course will strike a balance between the mathematics and the applications.
It introduces the theory and applications of random processes needed in various disciplines such as mathematical biology, finance, and engineering. Given the importance of this course, Strathmore Institute of Mathematical Sciences (SIMS) intends to equip the upcoming data science, biomathematics, mathematical finance and statistical science enthusiasts with skills sets that will enable them fit to pursue a career in one of these areas. This 8-week training will introduce the key concepts in stochastic processes and their applications in model building and predictions.

The course will cover among others, the following topics:
- Gaussian multivariate distributions and related distributions
- Gaussian white noise
- Brownian motion
- Stochastic convergence
- Markov Chains and Markov diffusion processes
- Stochastic differential equations
